Education Requirements for Sonography Certification

Primary Pathway

Candidates looking for main road credentials in Sonography must have — within the past five years* — successfully completed a Sonography academic program that is accepted by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT**. Beginning on Jan 1, 2015, all candidates for main road credentials in SON must have earned an academic stage before becoming certified.

As part of the amount and learning, candidates must also demonstrate skills in didactic curriculum and an ARRT-specified list of medical methods by completing the Sonography Didactic and Scientific Proficiency Requirements. NOTE: New skills specifications for sonography will go into effect on Jan 1, 2013. Applicants who complete their academic program during 2013 or 2014 may use either the version with the 2006 effective period of your energy and energy or the version with the 2013 effective period of your energy and energy. Applicants completing after Dec 31, 2014, may no longer use the version with the 2006 effective period of your energy and energy.

* Applicants completing from an academic program beginning Jan 1, 2013, will have three years to establish credentials for ARRT credentials, as opposed to the five years that is available to those who complete their program by Dec 31, 2012.

** ARRT usually recognizes only certification businesses that are determined by CHEA and/or USDE. Currently, that contains only local and programmatic accrediting companies listed here. The ARRT Board in July 2011 applied a moratorium on recognizing new certification companies while it is re-evaluating its recognition specifications.

Post-Primary Pathway

Candidates looking for post-primary road credentials in Sonography must be accepted with the ARRT in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Engineering (registration through NMTCB is also accepted), Rays Therapy, or Magnetic Resonance Picture (registration through ARDMS is also accepted). Applicants submitting applications between Jan 1, 2013, and Dec 31, 2014, may use either version of the specifications.
